Biology - PhD course

3 Years On Campus Phd Program

Osnabrueck University

Program Overview

"The doctoral course ""Biology"" was set up as part of the doctoral program ""Membranes and Cellular Communication"" funded by the Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture. The doctoral program deals with the molecular, biochemical, biophysical, cell and developmental properties of cells. 10 working groups from biology and one working group each from chemistry and physics take part in the research and training program. In the interdisciplinary doctoral program membranes and cellular communication, fundamental cellular processes in biological systems are investigated. Of particular interest are membrane-dependent transport and cell-cell communication processes as well as the proteins involved in building a cell membrane. In particular, links between these important cellular mechanisms and the differentiation of tissues and organs are being intensively investigated. The doctoral program enables students to deepen their knowledge of these disciplines through practical work and an accompanying training program. The doctoral program is an alternative form of doctoral studies. It leaves the other doctoral options unaffected and is carried out within the framework of the doctoral regulations of the University of Osnabr ck for the biology/chemistry department involved in the currently valid version. In a detailed introductory discussion right at the beginning of the doctoral thesis, the strengths and weaknesses of the students admitted to the doctoral program are determined. This initial discussion between students and a committee, which includes two project leaders and, optionally, a mentor from the group of former professors, leads to the development of an individual training program with recommendations as to which additional general skills (""transferable skills"") should be acquired."
