PhD schemes available within the School usually last for three years full-time study, with a thesis of 60,000 to 100,000 words presented at the end of this period. Among the doctoral essays that have been introduced successfully in recent years include Taliesin's Tale, the life and work of broadcaster Sam Jones, the popular singing of poets such as Twm Morys, Iwan Llwyd, Ifor ap Glyn and Myrddin ap Dafydd, the life and work of Alun Llywelyn -Williams, and adaptations for the television from the Saunders Lewis plays.

An MPhil allows for one full academic year of research, leading to a dissertation of up to 30,000 words. You are free to pursue your own course of research, decided upon in consultation with your academic advisor, who will supervise your work. We also offer an MPhil in Creative Writing that gives the student the opportunity to submit their own creative work towards their postgraduate degree.
