The Doctor of Philosophy in mechanical engineering degree is designed for students who plan careers in industrial or governmental research and development laboratories or problem-oriented agencies, as well as in the academic field.The field of mechanical engineering includes areas such as dynamics, vibrations and noise, energy systems, automotive engineering design, thermal energy transport, fluid transport, experimental stress analysis, solid mechanics, manufacturing processes and materials, tribology, numerical techniques, optical inspection, mechanics of metal forming, fasteners and bolted joints, and fuel cells. The Department of Mechanical Engineering is concentrating its efforts in these areas at the Ph.D. level.
