The Ph.D. is a more specialized degree: its purpose is to train students for careers in teaching and research at the college and university level. Students in the Ph.D. program will attain a deeper and broader understanding of East Asian languages (practical fluency in two is required in some cases). They will receive specialized training in the research skills and theoretical constructs of a particular field. But they will also become acquainted with unique demands and joys of teaching, which requires breadth and inventiveness as well as expertise.
MA in Chinese or equivalent is required, IELTS/TOEFL for nonnative English Speakers, Before the qualifying examination, students must demonstrate proficiency, both oral and reading, in the student's major language, as well as reading proficiency in French, German, or another European language relevant to their research area. For some areas of research, proficiency in a second modern East Asian language or a classical East Asian language is necessary.
