MArch Architecture (RIBA part 2)

2 Years On Campus Postgraduate Program

Birmingham City University

Program Overview

BCU’s MArch Architecture (RIBA Part 2) helps you strengthen your design voice while building the technical and professional skills needed for architectural practice. It’s ideal for students who already hold Part 1 and want a creative, studio-driven environment to advance their architectural thinking.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Your first year centres around an intensive design studio where you tackle complex architectural challenges and learn to merge creativity with technical reasoning. You’ll explore advanced design methods, develop your visual communication skills, and work with digital and physical modelling to push your concepts further.

Year 2

In Year 2, you take on more ambitious, often real-world design briefs that blend conceptual ambition with practical constraints. You’ll deepen your understanding of professional practice, construction, and technology while building an impressive final portfolio that reflects your identity as a designer.

Focus areas: design studio practice, architectural technology, professional practice, fabrication and digital modelling

Learning outcomes: ability to deliver sophisticated architectural proposals, strong technical integration, confident communication, and readiness for Part 3 and professional practice

Professional alignment (accreditation): RIBA Part 2 accredited and ARB prescribed

Reputation (employability): Recognised for strong design studios, hands-on workshops, industry engagement, and a pathway covering RIBA Parts 1–3 within one school

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At BCU, your architectural education is built around doing — sketching, modelling, researching, fabricating and testing ideas in environments that feel close to real practice. You’ll spend much of your time in design studios and specialist workshops, turning concepts into physical models and learning directly from tutors, technicians and visiting practitioners. The course also brings in live projects and international study trips, giving you the chance to understand how architecture operates in real communities and diverse global contexts.

Here’s how these experiences come together to support your learning:

  • Wood and Metal Workshop — a fully equipped space where you can craft detailed models and prototypes with the help of expert technical staff.

  • Ceramics Workshop — a hands-on environment for exploring clay, glazing and casting techniques that enrich material experimentation in your design work.

  • Plaster Workshop — ideal for mould-making and sculpting forms, helping you test structural or conceptual ideas at scale.

  • Digital Studios and Rapid Prototyping Tools — including 3D printers, laser cutters and CNC equipment, giving you the freedom to experiment with digital modelling and precision fabrication.

  • Open studio spaces in the Parkside Building — a collaborative, design-focused setting where you work alongside peers, prepare exhibitions and develop your portfolio.

  • Co.LAB live projects — opportunities to work with real clients, community groups and external partners on briefs that bring social, cultural and technical questions into your studio.

  • International fieldwork and study visits — annual trips to major global cities, helping you explore different architectural environments and broaden your design perspective.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from BCU’s MArch step confidently into the architectural profession with a portfolio that’s ready for practice and a strong foundation in design thinking. Many go on to roles such as Architect, Part 2 Architectural Assistant, Urban Designer or Project Architect across studios of all sizes.

You’ll also benefit from the university’s support network and industry connections, which help you move smoothly from study into employment:

  • Dedicated career support – BCU’s Careers and Student Opportunities team offers one-to-one guidance, CV reviews, interview practice and regular employer events to help you secure the right role.

  • Strong graduate outcomes – A high proportion of BCU students progress quickly into employment or further study after completing their degree.

  • Industry partnerships – The School of Architecture has links with more than 100 architecture practices, giving you exposure to real-world expectations and potential pathways into firms where many BCU alumni have built successful careers.

  • Accreditation value – The degree carries RIBA Part 2 accreditation and ARB prescription, both essential steps on your journey to becoming a fully registered architect in the UK.

  • Portfolio-driven, practice-ready skills – Through studio projects, live briefs and collaborative work, you graduate with a portfolio that clearly demonstrates your creativity, technical capability and professional readiness.
