The vision for A.B. Paterson College was born in 1989 during a shared meal among four close friends, who pondered the future education of their children and grandchildren on the Gold Coast. They envisioned the need for a school grounded in substance and Australian heritage, with traditional values yet a progressive educational mindset, all within a caring and supportive environment. From this humble beginning, the vision of A.B. Paterson College took shape. In 1989, then-Mayor Lex Bell introduced the Founding Chairman, Mr. Alan Rickard, to Mr. Robert Nicholls, who was later appointed as the founding Principal. A.B. Paterson College opened in January 1991 with 262 students from Prep to Year 9, becoming the first Queensland school to offer full-time Prep. Due to high interest and demand, the College started with two Prep classes and saw enrolment rise to 305 students by year's end.

With a stunning learning precinct, the Winton Centre, opened in 2019, and an exciting partnership with the NFL to create an academy for young athletes, A.B. Celebrations like Valedictory Week give students a chance to reflect on their journeys and create lasting memories with friends and mentors.
