Allenstown State School

Allenstown State School has been situated on its current location since 1877. The school holds great significance in showcasing the development of state education and its corresponding architectural styles. It has managed to preserve various structures and features, including two timber playsheds constructed in 1884, the Clayton Memorial which is a sandstone monument dedicated to a teacher and built by 1892, a swimming pool established in 1931, a front garden completed by 1932, a playing field created in 1936, a substantial brick school building constructed during the Depression era in 1939, and a parade ground established by 1948. 

The school stands as a prominent landmark in the area and holds a strong connection with the surrounding community. The Rockhampton community has celebrated the rich history of Allenstown State School, with a notable event occurring on 16 July 1977. The school organized an eight-day long celebration that included a fete, open day, and fireworks. During this event, a commemorative stone with a plaque was unveiled in the front garden by Nev Hewitt, MLA for Auburn. In the years that followed, the stone was slightly relocated and rotated in the front garden. Additionally, the school published a centenary book and in 1998, a plaque was added at the swimming pool, which was renamed the David Coughran Memorial Swimming Pool, in honor of a teacher who had dedicated 25 years of service to the school. 

The school commemorated its 125th anniversary in 2002, hosting various celebrations between May and July. Furthermore, in 2009, a commemorative history tour of the site was published by the school. As of 2019, Allenstown State School continues to operate from its original site, preserving its historical structures such as the two playsheds from 1884, the Clayton Memorial from the late 19th century, the 1930s swimming pool, front garden, playing field, Depression-era brick school building, and parade ground from 1948. The school holds immense importance to the Rockhampton community, serving as a central social hub and featuring memorials dedicated to influential community members associated with the school. Over the years, countless students have received their education within its walls, and numerous social events have taken place on its grounds, solidifying its place in the community since its establishment.
