School History & Details

Methodist Bishop William Fitzjames Oldham established the Anglo-Chinese School (ACS) in 1886 to raise pupils to be servants "for God and Humanity."

As part of the Ministry of Education's goal to diversify the landscape of national education, ACS became one of the first schools to become independent in January 1988. As a result, the school was renamed ACS (Independent).

ACS (Independent), a Methodist institution, has a solid foundation in spiritual ideals, a legacy of quality, and a worldwide outlook. It is the first national school to offer the IB Diploma Programme and was approved as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School in 2005. The school now provides two academic paths:

- the six-year Integrated course (IP) leading to the IB Diploma course, and - the four-year Express curriculum leading to the GCE O-Level Examinations.

    School Values

  • Steadfastness
  • Humility
  • Integrity
  • Empathy
  • Loyalty
  • Diligence
  • The school's mission is to develop students who are more like Christ, and we are motivated by the principles he upheld in his life and teachings.

A shield's main function is to guard and shield.  As ACSians traverse the complexity of life, we think that upholding our school's principles, which are encapsulated in the acronym SHIELD, will serve to direct and protect them in their relationships, judgment, and decision-making.

School Achievements

Achievements

Through the years, ACS (Independent) has had successful sporting outcomes, producing national champions and national athletes. Rugby, sailing, water polo, and swimming have all been popular sports. Since this distinction was first given out, in 1996, it has been The Straits Times' Top School in Sports (Boys) for an almost continuous period.[7] 1999 was an exception when The Chinese High School took home the prize. In 2018, it earned 17 gold medals and 10 silver medals, setting a record for the most gold medals in a single season. Numerous winning streaks have been enjoyed by the school, including the "B" Division Rugby Title from 1997 to 2003 and the "C" Division Rugby Title from 1997 to 2009. Rugby's grand slam was achieved in 2008 by ACS (Independent), who took home the "A" Division, "B" Division, and "C" Division championships. The National School Games (NSG) in the year 2022 featured competition from our "A," "B," and "C" Division shooters from the ACS (Independent) Shooting CCA. Shooters put in a lot of practice leading up to the NSG, always giving it their all and pursuing perfection in their sport. They had a difficult time juggling their demanding training schedules with their academic obligations. In addition to the team awards, we would like to congratulate Chua Joel from Class 2.06 (2nd in 'C' Division Rifle), Jason Kok Wen Hao from Class 3.15 (4th in 'B' Division Rifle), and Justin Loei Wen Hao from Class 5.07 (2nd in 'A' Division Pistol) for their outstanding individual performances.
