Assam Rifles Public School (Sports) was established on 1st September 1980 by Director General Assam Rifles, Lt. Gen Sushil Kumar, PVSM. The founding principal, Shri Mukut Narayan Tankha, took office on 24th September 1980, and the school was officially inaugurated by Shri L. P. Singh, the then Governor of the North Eastern States, on 10th October 1980. On January 4, 2021, the school was designated as a sports school under the Khelo India Scheme. It operates under the Assam Rifles Welfare Education Society (ARWES), which is registered under the Meghalaya Societies Act, 1960.
