Auckland Girls' Grammar School (AGGS) is a girls' secondary school in Newton, Auckland's central business district. It was founded in 1888 as Auckland Girls' High School and is one of the country's oldest secondary schools. In 1888, 78 girls and five teachers enrolled in Auckland's boys' grammar school on Symonds Street. Despite being on the same campus, they operated as two separate schools, and much effort was made to keep the males and girls apart! The girls had their quarters, with their entrance and a 14-foot wall separating them from the rest of the playground. Due to rising enrollment, the decision was made in 1906 to establish a girls' grammar school. Annie Whitelaw was named the first headmistress of Auckland Girls' Grammar School. In 1909, the school relocated to its current location on Howe Street. Auckland Girls has always been a forward-thinking institution. It has always had a social responsiveness tradition, and its growth closely parallels the social and cultural developments that have defined New Zealand society.
