Auckland Grammar School was established in 1869 and opened by the Duke of Edinburgh with 78 boys. 1878 the school shifted to the Albert Barracks and became Auckland College and Grammar School. A new school building was opened in 1880 by Sir George Grey on Symonds Street. It has a long history of success with tradition, values, and beliefs. With the help of quality teaching the school hopes that students develop valuable qualities that they can use even after they leave Grammer School. It promotes all-round excellence in sports, academics, and cultural pursuits. It inspires students to love learning.
