The Academy was founded in 1983 under the name King Khalid Islamic College, marking it as the first Islamic school in Australia. The initial primary campus buildings, located in Coburg, a suburb of Melbourne, were acquired in 1982 through a generous donation from the late King Khalid of Saudi Arabia. In honor of this contribution, both the primary and secondary school campuses were named after him. The secondary education segment in Melbourne commenced in 1991, initially offering classes for Years 7 and 8. This program has since expanded to include Year 12 VCE and IB classes, which were introduced in 1995. The Melbourne Secondary Campus of the Academy, located in North Coburg approximately 12 kilometers north of Melbourne, was inaugurated in 1995. Additionally, a new campus was established in Caroline Springs, to the west of Melbourne, in 2014.
