School History & Details

Barnard Castle School is a coed private day and boarding school. With the goal of enhancing education in the North East of England at the end of the 19th century, a group of Victorian visionaries came together to found Barnard Castle School, which is now what it is known as. John I de Balliol's endowment from the thirteenth century and the donation of local businessman Benjamin Flounders provided the money for its establishment in 1883. The goal was to establish a more affordable school that would provide instruction of the same calibre as the old public schools and accept students of any denomination. When females are allowed to enrol in the sixth form, Barnard Castle School becomes co-ed in 1982. Initially, boarders reside in the city.
