School History & Details

Belltrees Public School faced numerous setbacks in the 1870s, with Mr. George James Cobb and Mr. William Asser making several unsuccessful attempts to establish a school for the Belltrees community. In response to these rejections, Mr. Asser started a private school in 1875, but it was short-lived, and he eventually accepted that he would not be able to lead the establishment of a local school. Mr. Cobb then sought out another teacher, Mr. Murray Allen, who met the Council of Education's expectations. This proved to be successful, and the school was granted provisional status to commence operations in April 1876. It took over 3 years to reach the required enrolment of 25 students for the school to be recognized as a Public School, and it officially opened in 1879 as Belltrees Public School. The White family, who have owned Belltrees since 1853, have played a crucial role in the school's progress, showing ongoing enthusiasm and support through their assistance, guidance, and generosity.

Despite its modest size, Belltrees Public School has garnered numerous accolades: Eco-Schools Green Flag Accreditation: In 2022, it became the smallest Australian school to receive this international recognition for outstanding environmental actions.  NSW Tidy Towns Awards: Honored for Communication and Engagement, with additional commendations in Waterways and Marine Protection, and Young Legends categories.  Banksia Sustainability Awards: Finalist in 2023, acknowledging the school’s commitment to sustainability and environmental education.  NSW Minister’s Young Climate Champion Award: Recognizing students’ leadership in climate action initiatives.  NSW Environmental Education Awards: Celebrated for exemplary contributions to environmental education.
