In 1862, the Moorfields Public School, which later became Belmore South Public School, was established at the church. The old church building was demolished in 1967 due to irreparable damage. Sophie Elizabeth Ridgewell, from 1843 to 1869, served as the first government teacher at Moorfields School. A new school building was completed in 1917 on the south side of Canterbury Road, across from Burwood Road in Belmore. This relocation led to the school being renamed Belmore South Public School. Additional wings were added to the original building in 1920 and 1924, with the infants building being constructed in 1928. The total recorded costs for the site were 1,500 pounds, while the building itself cost 22,770 pounds. Belmore South Public School officially opened on 22 January 1917, with an initial enrollment of 241 boys and 203 girls. The first student to enroll was May Isobel Bowser at the age of 12 years and 8 months. Mr. Joseph Warrs served as the first Headmaster. The Infants Department was established in 1917 under the supervision of Miss A St Smith, and the Girls Department was formed in 1925 under the guidance of Mrs. M Keller.
