In 1857, Berwick Primary was founded in a dilapidated shepherd's hut next to the former Berwick hospital. On the triangle formed by Peel Street and the Harkaway Road, a new school was constructed, and the former structure is now home to the National Trust and a coffee shop/restaurant. In 1961, a memorial iron gate bearing the No. 40 was given to the school by past students. The Peel Street school's entrance was guarded by this gate. In honour of Berwick Primary's 160th anniversary, it was added to their history garden in the front of the school in 2017.
