School History & Details

A ten-acre block on Oakey-Southbrook Road was gazetted as a school reserve in 1880, but Biddeston didn't receive a school for another 39 years. About 20 feet by 14 feet, a tent was converted into Biddeston State School, which welcomed 14 students on Tuesday, October 14, 1919. The first principal and instructor at the school was Mrs. Margaret Cecilia Cloherty Anderson. In September 1920, there were 21 students. The Department's Construction Branch approved the $360 construction of a new building on February 18, 1921. October 10, 1921, marked the completion and readiness of the new building for usage. It was not much larger than the previous tent it had replaced. The committee was concerned about overcrowding at the school two years after the new facility was completed. Thirty-two children were enrolled in 1925; more would follow the holidays and in subsequent years. With state-of-the-art facilities, Biddeston State School is a growing school that offers your kids a joyful and engaging primary education.
