Birkdale has grown and developed since its founding at the turn of the century (1904) by Mr. Asterley, the first Head Master. The last thirty years have seen the most notable expansion of the school. In 1996, the Head Master was elected as a member of the Headmasters' Conference, a recognition of the school's growth and accomplishments. Currently, Birkdale is an independent day school with over 800 students enrolled in grades 4 through 18, and about 200 students in the Sixth Form. The Prep School is located close by on a specially constructed property that includes a distinct building dedicated to the Pre-Prep division. At 11, students transfer to the senior school.
