School History & Details

In 1863, Birregurra opened as a common school with John Hiskins as the first head teacher. There were 12 students enrolled at the time. Classes initially took place in a church hall until a schoolhouse was constructed. In 1865, a new school was built using locally fired bricks. During the 1870s, the school transitioned into a state school between 1873 and 1878. By 1926, the size of the brick school house was expanded. In 1948, the schoolhouse was deemed unsafe, leading to the use of iron rods and timber to reinforce the building. Despite efforts to make the schoolhouse safe, it was ultimately demolished in 1949. A new school with a rough-cast cement finish was constructed in 1950. In 1970, the school was renamed Birregurra Primary School. As of 2022, Birregurra Primary School continues to operate.

This role focuses on implementing whole-school approaches to mental health, enhancing student wellbeing, and building staff capacity to support students’ mental health needs . Community Engagement: The school’s Parents & Friends Association (PFA) organizes various fundraising events, such as trivia nights and raffles, to support school projects like building new playgrounds. These events not only raise funds but also strengthen community bonds .
