School History & Details

Built to Alexander Lobban's specifications, the modest weatherboard school building can hold up to forty students. The Blackheath Public School debuted on July 13, 1885, with Alexander McLennan appointed as its instructor. By the end of the same week, twenty or more students had registered. By year's end, the total had risen to forty-two. Alexander Lobban advised that the building be doubled in size at the end of 1886 after realising immediately that it was insufficient. The work was finished in the middle of 1887. Due to growing enrolment, a portable classroom was constructed on the school premises in 1947. The old timber building was thereafter used as a classroom until it was demolished in 1959. Since then, several buildings have been built to accommodate the expansion: in 1959, an assembly hall; in 1964, a kindergarten room; in 1975, a two-story administration, library, and classroom block; and in the 1990s, a new hall and other projects.
