Botany Public School

Botany Public School proudly holds the distinction of being the first public school established in Sydney and is recognized as the oldest surviving public school in New South Wales. Initially situated on the eastern side of Botany Road, the institution was originally named Botany Bay School, but it adopted the name Botany Public School around the year 1862. The original structure on the current school grounds was completed in 1869 and is now listed as a heritage site. The entrance is adorned with five Moreton Bay fig trees, each approximately 140 years old. In 1903, the primary building was finalized to accommodate the 545 students enrolled at that time, with only ten teachers and six classrooms available. Many local streets in Botany, such as Swinbourne and Chegwyn Streets, were named after families who attended the school, which served a community that included fishermen, tanners, market gardeners, and wool scourers, reflecting a vastly different local demographic. The school was once adjacent to a tannery, which was the source of a devastating fire that spread to the school on October 18, 1926. Tragically, the fire chief lost his life while attempting to extinguish the flames, resulting in the destruction of several buildings. In the past, cattle would roam into the playground, rendering much of it unusable due to unpleasant odors and a significant mosquito presence. To address this, a team of 40 men worked for six months to raise the playground's level by over a meter, allowing it to be utilized for recreational purposes. The current weather shed was formerly the site of the library. In recent years, the school has undergone numerous transformations, including the removal of hazardous 80-year-old coral trees, the construction of a new assembly hall, and the integration of modern technology into classrooms.
