Bowral High School

The establishment of the first public school in Bowral occurred around the year 1868. Secondary education was introduced in 1906 with the creation of a program at Bowral Public School, enabling students to pursue their studies beyond primary education. This secondary institution was referred to as Bowral District School. In 1915, the school celebrated its inaugural cohort of students who successfully completed the Leaving Certificate examinations. By 1920, the institution was renamed Bowral Intermediate High School, boasting an enrollment of 120 students. Notably, in 1921, the school welcomed a visit from Lord Chelmsford.

During the mid-1920s, the Bowral Parents and Citizens' Association (PCA) initiated plans to construct a dedicated high school building on land acquired from the New South Wales Department of Education. The PCA actively sought funding to expand the school's facilities and persistently appealed to the Minister of Education for financial support for the construction project. By February 1928, enrollment at Bowral Intermediate High had surged to 303 students, an increase of 51 from the previous year, which prompted the PCA to intensify its efforts to persuade the government to proceed with the school's construction. By 1929, the school had grown to accommodate 389 students and employed 14 teachers.

On June 8, 1929, the Minister of Education, David Henry Drummond, along with the mayor of Bowral, laid the foundation stone for the new high school building. The site, spanning three acres on the town's outskirts, was designated for a two-story structure akin to Goulburn High School, designed to accommodate approximately 420 students and featuring 11 classrooms. The building included an assembly hall, staff rooms, separate lavatories for men and women, open-air balconies, and various other amenities. The initial construction estimate from builder W. A. Gazzard was £20,000, which ultimately rose to around £25,000.

In the aftermath of World War II, Bowral High School stood as the sole public high school catering to students preparing for the Leaving Certificate from Picton to Goulburn until the establishment of Moss Vale High School in 1964.
