School History & Details

Brighton State School was established in the year 1920. Brighton was a tiny farming village in the early 1900s, mostly made up of fruit and small crop farms. The district's school-age youngsters had to trek three to five miles (5-8 km) on desolate and challenging roads to get to Sandgate. On October 14, 1916, the Brighton Farmers and Fruit Growers Progress Association organised a special meeting at Mrs. E.C. Raymond's home with the goal of establishing a state school. It was duly reported to the Under Secretary of Public Instruction that George Sackett, John Grey, Albert Ward, and Stephen Gerrard had been elected to the building committee.To take up his position as Head Teacher of the recently completed Brighton State School, Mr. Alfred Thompson relocated from Waterford. When the school was opened on January 27, 1920, there were 31 students enrolled.
