School History & Details

On July 1, 1921, Brisbane Junior State High School, Central Technical College High School, and the High Top of Wynnum State School merged to form Brisbane State High School. Beginning on July 4, 1921, 490 students and 20 faculty members attended classes in the former Normal School buildings at the intersection of Adelaide and Edward Streets in Brisbane. Brisbane State High School has come to represent and embody the best of state school education since it opened its doors in 1921. Pupils are surrounded by opportunities in a wide range of academic, athletic, cultural, and global contexts. The school has expanded significantly in the decades following 1921, and over 3,400 pupils are currently enrolled, spread across two campuses on Vulture and Merivale Streets.

Outstanding ATAR Results: In 2023, BSHS students achieved remarkable academic success, with several attaining the highest possible ATAR of 99.95. The school celebrated these accomplishments, reflecting the dedication and hard work of its students.  QCE Distinguished Academic Achievers: BSHS had a significant presence in the 2023 Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) Achievement Awards, with multiple students recognized as Distinguished Academic Achievers.

BSHS offers a comprehensive extracurricular program that fosters student growth beyond the classroom: Cultural Activities: Students can participate in various cultural pursuits, including dance troupes, drama club, instrumental music, school productions, technical crew, and vocal ensembles.   Clubs and Societies: The school hosts numerous clubs such as Amnesty International, Creative Writing Club, Duke of Edinburgh Award, Greenscapes, The Ink Drop magazine, Monday Masterclasses, Opti-MINDS, Student Digital Leaders, and the Student Representative Council.   Sports Programs: BSHS has a strong sporting tradition, offering activities like cricket, basketball, volleyball, cross country, athletics, AFL, badminton, debating, swimming, and more.
