The institution was founded in 1972 and, by 2015, had an enrollment of 900 students ranging from Year 7 to Year 12, with approximately 40% identifying as Indigenous Australians. Originally established as a district high school, it transitioned in 1990 into two separate entities: Broome Senior High School and a primary school. In 2008, the school suffered significant damage due to a fire, resulting in losses exceeding $50,000, which included the destruction of a transportable classroom. Enrollment figures have risen in response to the Western Australia School system's extension of high school years from five to six. This increase can be attributed to both the structural changes in the education system and the gradual growth of Broome as a tourist and economic center in the West Kimberley region. The enrollment numbers were 448 in 2007, 502 in 2008, 527 in 2009, 511 in 2010, 492 in 2011, and 560 in 2012. The school has been led by several principals, including R Dorn, G Ransom, G Downsborough, S Amin, and M Burt.
