Bishop Hawkins' concept of a cathedral school for the Diocese's pupils began in 1967 with the formation of a Provisional School Council, which is where Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School had its start. When classes started in 1972, there were 78 students enrolled. Bishop Hawkins and Mr. Val Lishman, a well-known local surgeon, led the faculty and laid a solid foundation. The school has frequently led the way in innovative teaching practices. Under the leadership of Mr. Eric Speed, the first coeducational residential school in Australia to provide both primary and secondary education, the school established strict structures. The School has been able to thrive because of the dedicated foundation teachers and the unwavering support of the school's parents and friends.
Bishop Ralph wanted to make sure that the next generation could have a solid education based on Christian morality and faith. Following the Anglican concept of honoring Scripture, Tradition, and Reason, the School has continued to focus on the fusion of religion and learning since its official opening on February 8, 1972. There is a focus on thoughtful and polite conversation when addressing the big issues of faith and life. Students are taught to formulate their own well-considered set of ideals and to approach life's issues philosophically.
