Evidence suggests that Bury Parish Church housed a grammar school as early as 1570, but by 1634, it was definitively established with Henry Dunster as its fourth known headmaster. Reverend Henry Bury, a former headmaster, left an endowment of £300 in his will towards maintaining a schoolmaster for the grammar school. Rev'd Roger Kay, an alumnus of the school who later earned his BA in 1688 and MA in 1691, re-established his old school in his hometown of Bury after donating a substantial portion of his estate in 1726. The school building where Kay's new institution educated the children of Bury still stands and is now known as Blackburn Hall. By 1903, the school relocated to a new Neo-Renaissance building on Tenterden Street, due to increasing enrolment. This new location, made of Accrington brick, was designed by architect William Venn Gough. The boys were eventually joined by the Bury Girls' High School which was re-established as the Bury Grammar School for Girls. Both schools shared the building until a modern facility for boys was built across Bridge Road in the 1960s. The construction of the boys' school took place on the existing playing fields, prompting the Governors to buy around 34 acres of land at Buckley Wells for new playing fields. The school functioned as a direct grant grammar school from 1944 to 1976 when it once again became fully independent following the abolition of the direct grant system. The school commemorated its 250th re-founding anniversary with a visit from Prince Philip on November 19, 1976.
