School History & Details

Evidence suggests that Bury Parish Church housed a grammar school as early as 1570, but by 1634, it was definitively established with Henry Dunster as its fourth known headmaster. Reverend Henry Bury, a former headmaster, left an endowment of £300 in his will towards maintaining a schoolmaster for the grammar school. Rev'd Roger Kay, an alumnus of the school who later earned his BA in 1688 and MA in 1691, re-established his old school in his hometown of Bury after donating a substantial portion of his estate in 1726. The school building where Kay's new institution educated the children of Bury still stands and is now known as Blackburn Hall. By 1903, the school relocated to a new Neo-Renaissance building on Tenterden Street, due to increasing enrolment. This new location, made of Accrington brick, was designed by architect William Venn Gough. The boys were eventually joined by the Bury Girls' High School which was re-established as the Bury Grammar School for Girls. Both schools shared the building until a modern facility for boys was built across Bridge Road in the 1960s. The construction of the boys' school took place on the existing playing fields, prompting the Governors to buy around 34 acres of land at Buckley Wells for new playing fields. The school functioned as a direct grant grammar school from 1944 to 1976 when it once again became fully independent following the abolition of the direct grant system. The school commemorated its 250th re-founding anniversary with a visit from Prince Philip on November 19, 1976.

School Achievements

Achievements

Reflecting back on the exceptional year of A-Level achievements, it is remarkable to observe the diverse range of courses that our students have decided to undertake.  A good number of students chose to take Computer Science, many of whom chose to spend a year in the industry as part of their program. Students such as Hamid Chaudhry, Emma Hyde, Joshua Isherwood, and Arran Kirk all achieved extraordinary A-level grades to meet the very high entrance requirements for this course.  A-Level Psychology has been progressively popular over the years with an increasing number of students enrolling in it. Subsequently, many opt to expand their knowledge of the subject at the university level. It was the school's pleasure to learn that Ava, after finishing a General Certificate of Higher Education in Psychology from the Open University, decided to continue studying Psychology at Durham University.  Students taking Humanities have been distributed all over the country. Isaac will be learning History at Newcastle University in the North East. Tom chose to continue his geography studies at Leeds University. Elliot has decided to study History and Economics at Cardiff University in Wales. Lastly, Dominic will be going to the seaside city of Exeter to learn about History.  Medicine continues to be a highly desirable career path among Bury Grammar School students and we are committed to supporting students in their exploration of all medical-related fields. This year Rebecca, Yasmin, and Aleena will be taking Nursing. Bhavani and Alisha will pursue Optometry. Fathiat, Quadri, and Ibrahim Saleem have chosen to study Pharmacy. Melika, Lucy, and Minha will be focusing on Bio-Medical Science, and Joe will be pursuing a career in Chemical Engineering.
