On the site of the pool there stood the old Bute House Preparatory School for Girls, which belonged to the Marquis of Bute. 1918 saw the first, albeit brief, use of the home as a school by Belgian refugees. It was requisitioned by the army during World War II and used as a boarding home for St. Paul's Girls' School until four years later. In the early 1990s, the institution's name was once more changed to Bute House Preparatory School for Girls.
