The name "Centenary" for the school is derived from the Centenary suburbs in which it is situated. In 1960, following the Centenary celebrations of Queensland, LJ Hooker announced plans for a significant satellite residential development spanning 1,295 hectares, which would include a bridge connecting the new development to the western suburbs of Brisbane. Initially referred to as the Hooker Centenary Development and the "Centenary Project," this area eventually became known as the "Centenary Suburbs," which encompass Jindalee, Mt. Ommaney, Jamboree Heights, Middle Park, Riverhills, and Westlake. The hillside location of Centenary was earmarked for a high school as early as the original development of Jindalee; however, it remained largely undeveloped bushland until the mid-1990s. After considerable advocacy from local residents, the Queensland Government announced the construction of a secondary school on the site. Centenary opened its doors in January 1999, initially serving a limited number of grades, but soon expanded to include Grades 8 through 12. The community embraced the new school, leading to a rapid increase in enrollment, as students no longer needed to travel to Corinda State High School or Kenmore State High School for their secondary education. Each year, the school hosts a Student Leader Forum, where students are appointed as 2 School Captains and Vice Captains (Year 12 only), Junior School Captains and Junior Vice Captains (Year 9 only), along with 4 Student Leaders (Years 7, 8, 9, and 10). The school's catchment area is confined to the Centenary suburbs and Sinnamon Park.
