It was decided to open a second Christian primary school south of Kingston in the early 1980s after Calvin Christian School in Kingston had reached capacity in its primary courses. A committee was established, and by 1987, there were enough kids and support from the Margate and Huonville communities to start a school. Many future parents worked voluntarily to construct the school's first phase. Finally, the school was ready for the February 1988 opening. The name "Channel" was chosen for the school because it encompasses the entire region south of Kingston, not only Margate, and because the school had historical and familial ties to the larger Channel region.
