School History & Details

Originally built as a private residence in 1583 for John Symes of Poundsford, the property was later converted into a grammar school by his son, William Symes, in 1671. The school transitioned into a public boarding school by 1890. The present-day independent preparatory institution, known as Chard School, was founded in 1972 and continues to use the original grammar school structure. This 16th-century building has been Grade II* listed since 1950 and is noted as being in a deteriorated state on the Heritage at Risk Register of Historic England.

School Achievements

Achievements

Lately, a few pupils from Year 6 have earned scholarships to various schools, including The Park School and Queen’s College, Taunton. Moreover, five pupils from the same year have been successful in securing their spots after passing the 11+ entrance tests. It's noteworthy that specialist subject rooms and specialist subject teachers are involved in teaching from Year 3 onwards.
School Achievements

Non-Academic Achievements

Apart from the regular curriculum, Chard School offers an array of extra-curricular activities, post school hours, which are complimentary unless an external instructor conducts them. These activities often include theatrical and musical performances that display the exceptional musical and theatre talents of the students, with their most recent production being the 'The Wizard of Oz' by junior students. On the sports front, the school teams have performed admirably. The boys' football team made it to the Independent Schools Association National Final, while the hockey team reached the county final. The netball team qualified for the area final and two pupils bagged Silver medals at the Independent School Association National Final.
