Originally built as a private residence in 1583 for John Symes of Poundsford, the property was later converted into a grammar school by his son, William Symes, in 1671. The school transitioned into a public boarding school by 1890. The present-day independent preparatory institution, known as Chard School, was founded in 1972 and continues to use the original grammar school structure. This 16th-century building has been Grade II* listed since 1950 and is noted as being in a deteriorated state on the Heritage at Risk Register of Historic England.
