School History & Details

For the past 150 years, Chatsworth Island Public School has served as a hub for the neighbourhood. The institution opened its doors in 1868. About a mile south of the current location, the first school on Chatsworth Island was constructed in 1868 on a one-acre plot of land that had been bought for eight pounds from Benjamin Jones. Mr. Gale was nominated and appointed Chatsworth Island's postmaster in September 1890. The average weekly attendance was thirty, and there were thirty-two students enrolled when the school first started. There were 77 students enrolled by May 1871. In addition to working at the school, the teacher's responsibilities also included transporting students from two other islands and the mainland by boat to and from school. The enrolment reached 107 by the end of 1876.
