Mr. Wu Tat Huan served as the school's first principal when it opened its doors in 1980 as Teck Ghee Secondary. On May 5, 1982, Mr. Lee Yock Suan, the representative for the Cheng San Constituency at the time, gave it its official opening. In 1981, the school adopted Deyi as its official name to correspond with the use of Hanyu pinyin. The school relocated to its new location on June 24, 2002, and on May 20, 2005, Mr. Tharman Shamugaratnam, the previous minister of education, gave it a formal opening.
The school's perspective of education—that every student is a jewel and that the teacher's job is to help each student realize his or her potential—is reflected in the mission statement.
