School History & Details

Framlingham College, founded in 1864, has a rich history that dates back over a century and a half. Originally known as the Albert Middle-Class College, the school was founded through public subscription to honor Queen Victoria's late husband, Prince Albert. It was also meant to serve as a memorial for him in the county of Suffolk. Sir Edward Kerrison, 2nd Baronet, Richard Garrett, and the Earl of Stradbroke were among the individuals most involved in setting up the school. They chose the land on which it was built from the Castle estate, which was originally left to Pembroke Hall, Cambridge by Sir Robert Hitcham in 1636. The school's architect, Fredrick Peck, was from Furnival's Inn, London, and he designed it to accommodate 300 boys. Framlingham College officially opened its doors to pupils on April 10, 1865. In the early days, Framlingham College interacted less than it should have with other leading schools. However, over the years, it has grown into one of the most prestigious educational institutions in the region. Its academic excellence is complemented by an extensive extracurricular program that fosters the development of well-rounded individuals. During World War II, Framlingham College faced a possible German invasion due to its proximity to the Suffolk coast. As a result, pupils from the college were evacuated briefly to Repton School in Derbyshire. The college's prep school, Brandeston Hall, was opened in July 1949 by Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone. It had been purchased and restored by the Society of Old Framlinghamians in honor of those who died in the world wars. Framlingham College continues to thrive, providing top-quality education to students from all over the world. Its rich history, distinguished alumni, and ongoing commitment to excellence make it one of the most highly regarded educational institutions in the region.
