The institution opened its doors as "German School Abu Dhabi" in 1976. It was solely open to employees of the main corporation. Subsequently, in the early 1990s, H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan provided a plot of land, and in 2006, the Central Administration for Schools Abroad certified the school as a German School Abroad. Kindergarten through grade 12 students study the State of Thüringen curriculum at the school. Beginning with the 2008–2009 academic year, the entire school relocated to the new, large school facility.
