The institution opened its doors as "German School Abu Dhabi" in 1976. It was solely open to employees of the main corporation. Subsequently, in the early 1990s, H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan provided a plot of land, and in 2006, the Central Administration for Schools Abroad certified the school as a German School Abroad. Kindergarten through grade 12 students study the State of Thüringen curriculum at the school. Beginning with the 2008–2009 academic year, the entire school relocated to the new, large school facility.
The school gives a very strong basis of knowledge covering all social and arts subjects. Building up a high level of intercultural competence and tolerance, to have a high level of foreign language competence in which the students can act independently, develop creative ideas, critically thinking, and possess outstanding study skills.
