The second Bishop of Gippsland, the Right Reverend G. H. Cranswick, established the Church of England Girls' School in 1924. Under the direction of Deaconess Marie Sundell, it started out as a modest primary day school for girls in St. Paul's Cathedral Hall and progressively grew into the lower secondary grades. 1934 saw the start of a period of rapid expansion, during which time facilities and furnishings were improved. The school's name was changed to "St Anne's Church of England Girls' Grammar School" in 1934, and a new emblem was created. Gippsland Grammar School was established on October 15, 1959, following a meeting chaired by the Right Reverend D. A. Garnsey, the recently elected Bishop of Gippsland, in July 1959.
