School History & Details

The institution was founded in 1903, evolving from the now-defunct Adelaide Agricultural School, which was established in 1897 under the leadership of Andrew Ferguson. Initially serving as the Preparatory School for the South Australian School of Mines and Industries, it underwent a name change to Junior Technical School in 1914 and subsequently to Adelaide Technical High School in 1918. The year 1998 was commemorated as the centenary year by both the school and the Old Scholars Association. Originally situated in the School of Mines building, which includes Brookman Hall—named in honor of benefactor George Brookman—at the intersection of North Terrace and Frome Road, the school became part of the City East campus of the University of South Australia. As the student population exceeded the capacity of the campus, the school was relocated in 1964 to its present site in Glenunga, adopting the name Glenunga High School in 1974. The current designation was established with the introduction of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in 1990-91, a strategic initiative led by The Honourable Greg Crafter to avert the school's closure due to declining enrolments. With an increase in student numbers, Glenunga International High School has since secured significant government funding and initiated various construction projects, including extensions to the technology and science wings, a new administration block, and a performing arts centre. Since 2005, the facilities have undergone numerous enhancements, including the addition of extra classrooms. In 2013, plans commenced for a new $10 million building to support the increasing student body. This project also included renovations to the Music, Science, and Art departments, along with the establishment of a new library. The upgrades were finalized in 2014. In 2020, construction began on new facilities, encompassing technology centers, science laboratories, and classrooms, with an estimated total expenditure of approximately $32 million. This construction was completed at the beginning of 2022, coinciding with the introduction of Year 7 students, and the school fully reopened to students and staff in the middle of Term 1.
