The history of Greater Manchester Independent School traces back to January 2017 when it was established as a small community initiative to counter and prevent anti-social behavior in North Manchester. Following its success, it evolved into a full-time alternative education environment, called 'Teenage Works.' This school catered to young individuals from North Manchester with emotional, social, and mental health issues who couldn't fit into mainstream education. In 2019, Teenage Works gained recognition as an Independent School, becoming a member of the Independent Schools Association. Operating across two sites in Manchester, and collaborating with numerous local enterprises and youth initiatives, Teenage Works for four years had 40 students full time, with over 95% transitioning to further education, training, or full-time jobs post-school. The institution employed more than 20 educators, tutors, and support personnel.
In 2022, the two campuses of Teenage Works were merged into a singular school facility in Failsworth. The following year, Louise Hodson, the founder and Executive Head of School, introduced a new aim and vision for the school - to become a non-profit institution. The intention behind this move was to widen the reach of the school and to offer specialist education and assistance to an increased number of young individuals in Greater Manchester.
The values at Greater Manchester Independent School are paramount to every activity and decision within the school community.
Accountability - The staff and students are held accountable for their actions. They ensure safety and happiness by acknowledging and owning up to the choices and decisions.
Cooperation - They cultivate teamwork, always considering and supporting one another in all the activities.
Motivation - They promote growth by embracing the positivity and success of others to enhance the learning and working processes.
Integrity - Transparency and truthfulness are key traits they uphold at the school.
Empathy – They foster a brave and nurturing atmosphere, emphasizing belief in the work and care for others.
Nourishment – The school values the need to provide every student with an opportunity to learn and grow in a loving and secure environment.
