Sir John Gresham established Gresham's Senior School in 1555 after converting Holt's Manor House into a Free Grammar School in response to Henry VIII's dissolution of the Monasteries. The School survived the Great Fire of 1708, which largely destroyed mediaeval Holt, and remained in the centre of the city for 350 years. The structure was greatly expanded and renovated in Victorian times, and it is still standing today under the name "Old School House," where their Pre-Prep School is currently housed. Gresham's Senior School was reestablished at the turn of the 20th century under the leadership of fresh and creative headmaster George Howson. Under Howson's leadership, the school relocated to its current location on the outskirts of Holt and implemented a modern curriculum that included the sciences and cultivated independent thought and creativity in its students.
Grehsham's Senior School want to instill in their students a respect for people of all faiths and beliefs. The Gresham's education encourages students to gain self-awareness while simultaneously developing an awareness of their place in the world as citizens. They are better equipped to develop an appreciation of others when they respect their own cultures and customs. They constantly work to meet the greatest levels of achievement, guided by an ethos that values each person's holistic development, including their spiritual and emotional health.
