School History & Details

Island School is a co-educational international school in Hong Kong's Mid-Levels district. It is a founding member of the English Schools Foundation, having been founded in 1967. International agencies such as the Council of International Schools and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges have approved the school. The school currently has approximately 1,200 pupils from 33 different countries. Since its inception, the school has relocated twice. From 1967 to 1972, the school was located on the site of a former British military hospital, and from 1972 to 2017, it was permanently located at 20 Borrett Road, Mid-Levels. However, due to construction, the school was temporarily relocated to two sites in the Sha Tin District in December 2017. After four years of renovations, the school relocated to 20 Borrett Road in August 2022. Island School is an IB World School that provides the IB diploma course as well as an alternative BTEC program in the senior years. In Years 10 and 11, Island School also offers the IGCSE. The school began in 1967 to accommodate the growing need for education among the children of expats in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong government formed the English Schools Foundation (ESF) in 1965 to provide additional schools for expatriate British children because there were no secondary schools for English-speaking pupils on Hong Kong Island.
