John Bapst, the premier independent school in the Bangor area, serves day students from all around the region as well as boarding students from around the world. The history of John Bapst dates back to the early 1920s when Bangor pastors from St. John's and St. Mary's parishes proposed a larger Catholic high school to accommodate an increasing demand. On September 10, 1928, John Bapst High School, named after a nineteenth-century Swiss Jesuit priest and missionary, debuted as a parochial high school for boys and girls. In 1929, the first batch of 29 girls graduated. For the next four decades, boys and girls attended separate classes, which ended in the 1960s. During its early years, the school developed a solid reputation in both academics and athletics. The majority of students at John Bapst Memorial High School are from the towns of Orrington, Glenburn, Veazie, Dedham, School Administrative District 63 (which includes the towns of Holden, Eddington, and Clifton), Milford, Bradley, and Orland. The school became a residential international school in 2011-2012, and it now serves around 50 foreign students from China, Vietnam, Korea, Kazakhstan, Spain, Germany, Austria, Albania, Egypt, Mongolia, and other countries.
