School History & Details

The origins of King Edward VI High School for Girls may be traced back more than 600 years to the Gild of the Holy Cross. However, the establishment of an upper school for girls, a boys' high school, and a boys' middle school was not suggested until 1864, by the newly liberal-controlled town council. King Edward VI High School for Girls was established in 1883 on the location of New Street and encouraged pupils to continue their education beyond elementary school, including grammar school, high school, and university. King Edward VI High School for Girls, with its stunning library and Sir Paul and Lady Ruddock Performing Arts Centre, is a remarkable example of a modern school that combines tradition with innovation.
