Bath Priory had been controlled by monks, and the city lost its original grammar school when Henry VIII dismantled it in 1539. Prompted to action by their boys' lack of educational opportunities, the Bath mayor and people petitioned the nascent King Edward VI for funding to build a new grammar school. Consequently, in July of 1552, the King issued a Charter that established 'a school for the training of boys and young men in grammar to endure for life'.

King Edward's Pre-Prep & Nursery School is the highest ranked coeducational independent school in the region and the second-best performing independent school in the South West according to the latest rankings, which are based on the percentage of examination entries receiving A*-B grades at A Level and entries returning A*/A or 9/8/7 grades at GCSE or iGCSE.  Out of all the schools in the South West, King Edward's Pre-Prep & Nursery School is ranked fourth.90.0% of A Level entries received an A*-B grade and 90.2% of GCSE entries returned grades of A*/A or 9/8/7 in the school's exceptional external examination results from last summer. In this year's rating of independent schools, the school is ranked 66th nationally based on these findings.
