School History & Details

King's Bruton is a co-ed independent boarding and day secondary school located in Bruton, Somerset, England, which follows the English public school tradition. Richard FitzJames established the school in 1519, and it gained royal foundation status about 30 years later during Edward VI's rule. Since the 1960s, girls have been part of the school's sixth form, and by the late 1990s, King's became fully co-educational. The school is divided into six houses: Wellesley, Priory, and Arion for girls, and New, Blackford, and Lyon for boys.

Achievements

Pupils at King’s are offered a challenging and stimulating curriculum that has been designed to stretch their capabilities and maximise their personal development.  Pupils are taught by subject-specialist teachers and benefit from their knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm. The teachers, not only inform and instil knowledge but also look to enrich and encourage curiosity and intrigue, preparing pupils for a world full of uncertainty and opportunity through a rich and diverse curriculum. The school is committed to providing excellent teaching, small class sizes and enrichment opportunities for pupils in an environment that helps nurture and promote intellectual and emotional development. Teaching at King’s is innovative and allows for every pupil’s specific needs to be met. Through the promotion of active learning and differentiated approaches to teaching and learning, pupils at King’s make excellent progress and leave thoroughly prepared for life beyond the classroom. The strong pastoral side of the School helps to support pupils with their academic progress and the outstanding support and guidance offered to pupils by the teachers, tutors and Housemasters helps ensure that every pupil, regardless of ability, is provided with opportunities and provision to enable them to achieve their academic potential. A frequent and comprehensive programme of assessment is built into this programme of support and ensures pupils are aware of their academic progress, targets and mechanisms for progress. The GCSE curriculum is designed to provide breadth and balance for pupils and to provide them with the necessary skills and intellectual development to progress into the Sixth Form and beyond. Built around a core of Mathematics, English, Science and Languages, it offers opportunities for pupils to select subjects that are of particular interest. In the Sixth Form, pupils can select from an extensive range of subjects that will not only serve to challenge them but to help provide and promote curiosity, enthusiasm and motivation. Academic rigour and a coordinated programme of support have meant that 98% of pupils at King’s are accepted into their first choice university and this includes Oxbridge, International, Medical and Russell Group Universities.
