It was designed to house 50 children, but 54 were enrolled on the first day, so it had just one room and was crammed full from the start. Nonetheless, the Education Board began using the recently constructed Presbyterian Church for some of the lessons in May 1922.
The school was under the supervision of Mr. F. J. Lownsborough, the first assistant at St. Heliers School, until 1924, when it separated from St. Heliers. After that, Mr. Kenny was named the first headmaster. It was 180 on the roll in May 1924.
"To produce empowered, connected learners committed to our future" is the school's stated goal, which is consistent with its vision, purpose, values, and motto. The school also aims to instill in students a desire for learning throughout their lives and making meaningful contributions to society.
