School History & Details

For £860, two acres were bought in Rawhitiroa Road in 1919. For £950, a structure was constructed, and Kohimarama School was established in 1921 as a wing of St Heliers School. It was designed to house 50 children, but 54 were enrolled on the first day, so it had just one room and was crammed full from the start. Nonetheless, the Education Board began using the recently constructed Presbyterian Church for some of the lessons in May 1922.

The school was under the supervision of Mr. F. J. Lownsborough, the first assistant at St. Heliers School, until 1924, when it separated from St. Heliers. After that, Mr. Kenny was named the first headmaster. It was 180 on the roll in May 1924.
