La Martinière College is a premier private educational institution in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, India. The college is divided into two schools for boys and girls, each on a different site. La Martinière College (for males) was founded in 1845, while La Martinière Girls' College opened in 1869. La Martiniere Boys' College is the only school in the world to have received royal battle honors for its involvement in defending Lucknow and its residencies during the Indian Rebellion in 1857. Major General Claude Martin, a French adventurer, founded the La Martinière family of schools, which includes the two Lucknow colleges. There are two La Martinière Colleges in Kolkata and three in Lyon. La Martinière provides a liberal education, with English as the medium of instruction. The schools cater for students aged 5 to 17 or 18 and are open to children of all religious denominations. The boys' school has a Chapel, a Hindu Temple, and a Mosque on its campus and has remained a non-denominational school since its inception, as opposed to the two La Martiniere Schools in Calcutta, which are Christian schools controlled by the Anglican Church of North India. Both schools have day and residence scholars (boarders).
