School History & Details

Lawrence Academy was established in 1793. It is one of the oldest independent schools in the US. The Board of Selectmen and the leading citizens of Groton signed a Subscription list to find an academy. When John Hancock Signed the first charter Groton Academy was formed. Over the 75 years, the school not only changed its name to Lawrence Academy but also enjoyed a reputation both locally and nationally.  As the year passed the competition came from the increasing number of free high schools. To survive the school closed for one year and reopened in 1900 as a non-sectarian boy's preparatory school. The school gradually expanded With the sound pre-college program. Now the school celebrates its history through Photographs and memorabilia.
