School History & Details

Leicester Grammar School, founded in 1981, holds a significant place in the history of the city's educational system. Established with the goal of reinstating the exceptional standards of the former grammar schools in the area, the school has grown into a leading academic institution with a national reputation. With an initial student body of just 96, the school flourished under the leadership of its first headmaster, John Higginbotham, and grew to 560 students in just 10 years. Situated in the heart of Leicester City Centre, the school was housed in four late-Victorian buildings in close proximity to the Leicester Cathedral. Its founders aimed to provide an education with an Anglican Christian ethos, a value system that is still an essential component of the school's core beliefs. Leicester Grammar School became the country's top co-educational school in 1993 and was subsequently elected to the Headmasters' Conference, cementing its status as one of the most highly-regarded institutions in the nation. The school's expansion was constrained by its former city-centre location, and it was limited to the facilities that it had at its disposal. In February 2007, construction began on a green field site in Great Glen, marking a new chapter in the school's history. The campus is home to both Leicester Grammar Senior School and its sister institution, Leicester Grammar Junior School. The two schools occupy separate buildings but share facilities, including the refectory and sports areas. The school's sporting offering has been significantly enhanced by the addition of 75 acres (30 ha) of playing fields, providing pupils with the chance to hone their athletic skills in an outstanding setting. The school's modern facilities, excellent academic results, and focus on fostering a supportive and inclusive community have ensured that Leicester Grammar School continues to go from strength to strength, more than three decades since its establishment.

  • At Leicester Grammar School, values are not just a list of words, but a way of life that each student embodies and carries with them beyond the school walls. They live by the values of respect, trust, courage, curiosity, and community, and it's what makes the school special. Respect is a fundamental value that underpins everything they do. They treat themselves, others, and the environment with care, kindness, and courtesy. They are mindful of our words and actions and always strive to make a positive impact on the world around them. Trust is built on honesty, integrity, and responsibility. They hold themselves accountable for their actions, practice self-discipline, and demonstrate a strong sense of ethics. This allows students to form meaningful connections and build a culture of mutual trust and support. Courage is what drives them to push themselves beyond limits and strive for greatness. They are determined, resilient, and committed to their goals, no matter how challenging they may be. Curiosity is a hallmark of a great mind. They encourage independence, initiative, and creativity, and they're always on the lookout for the spark that sets the hearts and minds on fire. They foster self-awareness and scholarship, and they're always asking questions and exploring new ideas. Community is what brings them all together. They believe in equality, service, and empathy, and they strive to create a compassionate, collaborative, and inclusive environment. They value selflessness and work together to make a positive impact on the world.
