The prep school, senior school, and sixth form make up the college. It has also been known by the names "Collegiate Institute" and "Welsh College, Llandovery" at various points in its history. Thomas Phillips established Llandovery College in 1847. On St. David's Day 1848, a small group of boys attended the school's inaugural session. The current structure's foundation stone was laid on December 13th, 1849. In the late 1960s, the first girls were allowed admission.
