Llandovery College is a coeducational independent day and boarding school in Llandovery, Carmarthenshire, Wales. The college is made up of Gollop Preparatory, Senior School, and Sixth Form. It was originally known as "Welsh College, Llandovery" and "Collegiate Institute" at different points in its history. Llandovery College was founded in 1847 by Thomas Phillips, a surgeon, and later plantation owner. After the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, he received £4737 8s 6d in 1836 for releasing 167 slaves. He used £4,600 to create Llandovery College. He envisioned a classical and liberal education that emphasized the Welsh language, literature, and history. The town of Landovery was chosen due to its strategic location and easy access to other sections of South Wales. Beyond that, it was "the great beauty and healthiness of the locality and the absence of manufacturing industries. On St. David's Day in 1848, the school opened with a small group of lads. On December 13, 1849, the foundation stone for the current structure was set.
